Fondation Café

Launched in November of 2013 by Australian born & co-owner Chris Nielson, Fondation café is the new kid on the ‘coffee’ rack.

Despite a growing line of popular specialty coffee & tea shops in the fashion capital, the ‘culture café’ has undoubtedly set its foundation in the city – pun intended!

Well, we stopped by on a Sunday afternoon while riding around the République area looking for a spot to have our usual French goûter. We run into Chris tending to some clients. He warmingly invited us in between two servings of café serrés. Moments later after a brief introductory, I understand that over and above seeing to the usual coffee addict, per se, Fondation Café aims to recreate the coffee experience for the locals.

But what is Fondation Café?

A pale-white walled, minimalist coffee shop furnished with symmetrical light wooden stools & tables, vibrant lime green coffee cups with matching saucers, and a very neo-bohemian chic feel.

It is a contemporary feul-and-go type coffee shop with a VERY minimalist menu (see Fondation’s full menu below), so would not cater for large groups.
In fact, the whole concept differs greatly from the average Parisian café which usually has a bar and dining area that can cater for those intending on staying more than an hour.

The minimalist theme follows through from the decor, to the food and the way it’s served : museli or avo on toast for breakfast and banana or carrot cake for tea, all served with your favorite variant of their famous Belleville coffee or café crème.
The good news is that you can either eat in or take it to go (in perfect French “Sur place” ou “à emporter”).

Unlike Claus or Café Pinson, Fondation isn’t your go to place if your looking for “cozy”. But the calming feel of the place that enables you to escape from fast-paced Paris, Chris’ witty personality and the simple but equally good food, makes Fondation my new go-to spot for a quick coffe break.

The impeccably designed space, minimalistic décor and tiny interior ensure that your attention is immediately drawn to the counter with its vibrant green saucers & cups and retro looking metal cups and cutlery. Fondation proposes few food options ranging from the Emperor Norton granola cookies, the famous chocolate tart and other delectable cakes.
On a more savory note, you can settle for the avocado on toast, served with salt and chilli powder.
